Google Tag | Remove Unwanted Referrals in GA4

ga4

When setting up GA4 it is important for channel acquisition reports that “internal” referral domains are excluded from the Google Tag settings. This is to ensure that the original traffic source of a user journey does not get overridden by e.g. a payment gateway provider such as PayPal. If a user came through on a Google Ads click and paypal.com was not excluded then source/medium would be overridden from “google / cpc” to “paypal.com / referral”.

Within GA4 settings this can be configured in Cog (Admin) > Data Streams (Web) > (Google Tag) Configure Tag Settings > Show All (drop down) > List unwanted referrals
